      In the United States, the first electric traffic light was invented in 1912 by Lester Wire, a police officer in Salt Lake City, Utah. Wire's device consisted of a wooden box with two red and green lights that were wired to a timer and operated by a manual switch. The first electric traffic light was installed at the corner of 200 South and Main Street in Salt Lake City, where it quickly became an object of fascination and controversy.

      Over the next few decades, many improvements were made to the electric traffic light, including the addition of amber lights, pedestrian signals, and more sophisticated control systems. The first automatic traffic light, which used a sensor to detect the presence of vehicles and adjust the timing of the signals, was invented in the 1930s by Joseph M. Hoberman, an engineer at General Electric.

      Despite its many advances, the traffic light remains a simple yet indispensable device that has helped to make urban life safer and more manageable. Today, traffic lights are ubiquitous on streets and highways around the world, and new technologies such as computerized control systems, LED lights, and wireless communication are continuing to improve their efficiency and effectiveness.
